How Does Newt’s Return to ALIEN Alter the Franchise?

For the first time ever, it’s Alien Day—an officially sanctioned fandom holiday that allows us to reflect on the best parts of the Alien franchise that were brought to Earth by directors Ridley Scott and James Cameron. Some of the other stuff, we’re trying to forget. But there is hope for a new day in the Alien franchise, and we’ve got the breakdown in today’s Nerdist News!

Director Neill Blomkamp started off Alien Day by dropping some new concept art from Alien 5, featuring a badass, grown-up version of Newt, the young girl who survived the events of Aliens alongside Ripley. Newt was one of the off-camera victims of Alien 3 along with our bro, Corporal Hicks, but it looks like Blomkamp is just gonna retcon Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection out of existence, Superman Returns style!

Join Nerdist News host and Xenomorph biology expert Jessica Chobot as she examines what Newt’s return could mean for the Alien franchise. Judging from comments by Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn, the new Alien 5 could be a passing of the torch to Newt as the new main character of the franchise. But who should play Newt? Jennifer Lawrence? Brie Larson? Or maybe one of our favorite Game of Thrones actresses?

Of course, the biggest hurdle now is simply getting Alien 5 into production. 20th Century Fox and Blomkamp put it on hold when Scott committed to making Alien: Covenant as the first film in a new prequel trilogy. But we still have hope that Alien 5 could happen!

How do you feel about the potential return of Newt as the leading character of Alien 5? Avoid the facehuggers, and let’s discuss in the comment section below!
