Until now, if you wanted to reenact scenes of popular songs being gently and cleverly parodied with lyrical wit and an accordion, your only option was an action figure of Weird Al Yankovic as he appeared on The Simpsons. And there’s nothing wrong with that–but with only a few points of articulation, it was hard to get him into truly realistic polka poses. And that, friends, was simply an untenable situation.
And NECA Toys, who made the Simpsons figure, clearly knew it, too. Which is why today they announced and revealed the first in a whole line of Weird Al toys.
Part of the company’s retro-action line, which features 8-inch fully poseable bodies underneath cloth outfits a la the Megos of old, the Weird Al line will kick off with a figure that includes interchangeable heads sporting both Al’s ’80s white-guy ‘fro and more modern lengthy locks. Plus, of course, a microphone and accordion.
Naturally, the mind boggles at what potential Al figures could come next. NECA has the rights to Rambo, so could we see a UHF-style Al in Stallone garb? A Â blimp-sized “Who’s Fat?” version? (That one might be trickier–it would mean making a whole new base body just for that figure, which would only be viable if NECA plans fat characters in other lines.) Al as Kurt Cobain, anyone? Claymation Al?
No doubt we all have our favorites, and presumably this first one needs to sell well to justify more. So get to pre-ordering, everyone! You can dare to be stupid by buying other toys on your own time.
Which version of Al would you like as a plastic pal down the line? Throw out some ideas in comments below.
