“I guess that’s how they know me, how they’ll remember me”
This last weekend was all about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and rightfully so. Even Naughty Dog decided to get in on the fun by releasing a new Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End CG trailer in movie theaters before showings of the aforementioned film. Sony has since released that trailer for everyone to watch. Peep the 30-second trailer above.
Despite it being a very short trailer with zero gameplay, it’s actually quite moving. We already knew this would be Nathan Drake’s last adventure, but the short clip makes it sound like he will actually die. While everything is collapsing around our favorite hero, Drake delivers a monologue about being remembered as a man who only cared about the treasure, while he’s seemingly lunging towards a gold coin that’s flying into an abyss. He then says that he’s not that man, and when the camera pans out, Nathan is actually lunging to save his brother.
I still don’t believe Naughty Dog would kill off such an iconic character, especially after teasing Sully’s death in Uncharted 3 and not going through with it. But it would show a whole lot of gall if they do go through with it. I suspect this whole scene will actually be about Nathan riding off into the sunset, rather than him dying.
From a marketing standpoint, showing this to Star Wars fans before The Force Awakens was a brilliant strategy. Most gamers are already on board with this franchise, but getting the mainstream audience interested in it is an ace move.
