New SUPERNATURAL Extended Trailer is Full of Family-Driven Intensity

We’re getting closer to the premiere of the twelfth season of Supernatural, and the latest extended trailer for the show is setting us up for what looks to be a pretty intense year. Season 11 spoilers ahead, so read on at your own risk if you’re not caught up with the show.

Last season brought in a huge storyline with Sam and Dean working to defeat the Darkness, who happened to also be God’s sister. After such a major plot arc, the showrunners decided to take the Supernatural’s twelfth season back to the heart of the show: family. They did this by bringing the boys’ mother, Mary, back from the dead. With Mary’s miraculous return, Supernatural is going to be taking “the family business” to a place it has never been before. After all, one of the things that attracted Mary to John in the first place was that he was so far removed from the world of hunters. It will be quite a shock for her to see her boys as two of the most notorious hunters on the planet.

Of course that’s not all that we’ve got in store for us in season 12. We’ll also get to see Lucifer played by someone other than the incomparable Mark Pellegrino and Misha Collins. Legendary rocker Rick Springfield will be playing the devil himself this season, and the extended trailer gives us just a taste of what that will be like. While I can’t wait to see what Springfield will bring to the role, I’ve got to be honest that I’m really hoping to see Pellegrino back as Lucifer soon.

While there are some pretty huge questions about Mary (who apparently shares her son’s love affair with the Impala—that could be interesting), Lucifer, and what could possibly be next for the boys after saving the world from God’s sister, there is still the very real threat from the English branch of the Men of Letters. Poor Sammy is captured and being tortured by them, and while we know he’ll get free and will ultimately be fine (there’s nothing harder to kill than a Winchester, after all), I think we’re all concerned about poor Moose. Plus, how will Sam and Dean’s “legacy” status be affected now that they know how big the Men of Letters world is?

We’ve got big questions here that can’t possibly be answered quickly enough, but we’ll have to wait until Supernatural premieres on the CW on Thursday, October 13!
