New Supercut Explores the Evolution of Pixar Over 47 Films

Last weekend, Finding Dory continued Pixar‘s blockbuster tradition by getting the highest opening weekend box office in animation history. This was not a huge surprise, considering that Finding Nemo was one of the most successful animated movies of all time. With few exceptions, Pixar’s 17 feature films have been smash hits and critically acclaimed. By the time that Disney purchased Pixar, it paid $7.4 billion, which is almost twice what it cost to acquire Marvel and Lucasfilm! And it was definitely money well spent.

Burger Fiction‘s latest supercut explores the evolution of Pixar, and it’s a story that goes back further than most people realize. Almost everyone remembers how Toy Story changed the game for animation in 1995, which eventually ushered in the era of 3-D animation. But the video starts in 1984, with the release of Pixar’s first animated short film, The Adventures of André and Wally B. This was followed by Luxo Jr., Red’s Dream, and Tin Toy. The first Pixar shorts lack the polish that we’ve come to expect from the company, but even in these brief clips, the company’s aesthetic shines through.

Pixar’s rise was truly impressive, but it also had unintended consequences for the traditional 2-D animation that Disney had pioneered for decades. Now, American produced 2-D animated films are a rarity, while DreamWorks Animation, Illumination, and even Disney’s primary animation studio have all embraced 3-D. For better or worse, that’s a trend that’s here to stay.
