New Godzilla Makes His First Appearance in Leaked Images

Toho’s new take on their towering, radiation-breathing monster can be summed up in two words: more teeth!

After the roaring box-office success of Gareth Edwards’ American version in 2014, it was only natural that the studio that originally spawned the most famous kaiju of all time would resurrect the “King of the Monsters.” They’re doing just that for Godzilla: Resurgence, due out later this year. And not to be outdone, Toho has created what may be the most demonic Godzilla ever brought to the screen. Photos leaked earlier this week show that Big G’s latest incarnation is scarred and extremely toothy. Check it out:

Dead eyes, evil smile, creepy skin… Godzilla looks ready to run for the GOP nomination. Plus, while pretty much everyone agrees that the 1998 U.S. adaptation of Godzilla was a steaming kaiju turd, it appears as though the movie’s tagline, “Size does matter,” stuck. While the 2014 Godzilla was the tallest yet, towering 355 feet above us puny humans, the new Japanese version is said to be over 30 feet taller still. This makes the original Godzilla, topping out at 165 feet, a bit of a shrimp.

This isn’t even close to the first time Godzilla has received a makeover. The monster has been changing and growing in size from its origin until the present, embodying everything from the walking devastation of the A-bomb to a guardian of children’s dreams (or something? Son of Godzilla was a weird one). But according to early rumors, there’s a specific reason why these early photos make Godzilla look a little crispy.

Birth.Movies.Death reports that the Godzilla we’ve seen so far is meant to be our first introduction to a burnt-out and charred beast. Fightin’ armies and other monsters can really take it out of you. But Godzilla will change throughout the course of the new film, meaning that there’s a lot more we haven’t seen yet. So if you’re not sold on the redesign, relax. As Godzilla might say, “This isn’t even my final form.”
