New GODS OF EGYPT Trailer is Just Plain Bananas

Back in November we showed you the first trailer for Alex Proyas’ new film Gods of Egypt, a fantasy-action take on the Egyptian mythology full of animal-headed gods with powers and things. We also talked a little about the controversy surrounding the movie, which has cast almost entirely white actors as Egyptians, resulting in Proyas himself apologizing for the lack of diversity. Well, the new UK trailer for the film is out and it looks like the makers are trying to distance themselves from any more controversy by focusing on what looks like the movie’s absurd levels of action.

The trailer proclaims the movie as being “from the visionary director of I, Robot and The Crow,” which Proyas did indeed direct. I think it’s funny, though, that they didn’t mention Dark City which is arguably his best and most visionary movie. But no matter. The trailer’s got gods in shining armor flying at each other, pyramids crumbling to the ground, massive scarab beetles, a chase from enormous snakes, and an Ancient Egyptian city that looks less like how it actually was and more like if they expanded Las Vegas’ Luxor into the entire strip. In other words, it’s cuckoo-banana-pants.

Gods of Egypt stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as the birdy-god Horus who’s been defeated and banished by his cousin Set (the doggy-headed god of bad things played by Gerard Butler). Now, in order to save the kingdom’s humans from enslavement, a young boy named Bek (Brenton Thwaites) has to recruit Horus so he can become the Kingslayer. It’s a tale as old as time. The song, however, is not as old as rhyme, so we’re in the clear there.

February 26 will be the day to see who wins and who loses (but I can make a pretty educated guess) when Gods of Egypt apparates into theaters. Will you be there to see the Memphis Mayhem, or is this going to be embalmed on arrival? Let us know in the comments below!
