Filming on the long anticipated 2016 TV revival of The X-Files is underway in Vancouver, BC (where much of the original series was shot), and saying that fan anticipation for this six-episode limited run is high is something of an understatement. Although their last attempt at a revival was the ill-fated 2008 movie X-Files: I Want To Believe, fans know that The X-Files always worked best as a television series first and foremost, so the notion of Scully and Mulder returning to the small screen has folks far more excited than another movie probably ever could.

Series creator Chris Carter is back, as are stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny as Scully and Mulder, along with other original series actors Mitch Pileggi as Skinner and William B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man. Also returning are original series writers James Wong, Glen Morgan, and Darin Morgan. Darin Morgan’s new episode is titled “Mulder and Scully Meet The Were-Man,” which might already win for best episode title ever. Not coming back though are any of the old “monsters of the week,” as Chris Carter wants to focus on new stories and doesn’t want to to reboot any of the old favorites.

Entertainment Weekly was on set for the first week of filming and managed to get a few tidbits of info they were allowed to share with eager fans. It seems that Chris Carter is getting back to the show’s roots with some alien abduction action happening. One episode has Fox Mulder and Dana Scully investigating another case of a possible abductee, played by The Americans’ Annet Mahendru. If that’s not enough to get you excited, the same episode will feature Community’s Joel McHale as a conservative talk show host.

We also learn that Mulder isn’t in the greatest place emotionally speaking when the new series begins. According to Duchovny, “Mulder’s not in a great place; He’s wearing bad jeans, so you can just extrapolate from my wardrobe. He’s in a dark, dark place.” In fact, according to series creator Chris Carter, “dark” is the overall vibe he’s going for. He wants this version of the series to reflect some of the darker aspects of our current cultural climate, saying “X-Files ended right after 9/11; a lot has happened since then. A lot of rollback of rights and liberties in the name of our protection. We’re being spied on now, we’re being lied to — all things that, for me, remind me of when I grew up, which was right around Watergate. I think we’re in similar and much more dire times right now.”

The all-new X-Files are set to air on FOX next year, on January 24, 2016.
