New David Bowie Documentary Will Explore His Final 5 Years

New David Bowie Documentary Will Explore His Final 5 Years

One of the many reasons that we’re eager to see 2016 in the rear view mirror is that we had to say goodbye to music legend David Bowie long before we were ready to let him go. Even though Bowie lived to be 69 years old, it still felt too soon to lose him. Next January will be the one year anniversary of Bowie’s death, and BBC has big plans to honor Bowie for what would have been his 70th birthday.

As reported by Vulture, BBC Two will premiere David Bowie: The Last Five Years, which serves as a sequel to the David Bowie: Five Years documentary that was released in 2013. The Last Five Years will chronicle the making of Bowie’s musical, Lazarus, as well as his final two albums: The Next Day and Blackstar. The documentary will also include previously unseen footage and interviews with Bowie, as well as his original recording of “Lazarus.”

Unfortunately, the trailer for The Last Five Years can currently only be seen in the United Kingdom. But it did feature a very telling quote from Bowie’s long time producer, Tony Visconti: “He would stand in front of the mic and for the four or five minutes he was singing he would pour his heart out.” The documentary will debut in January 2017.

BBC will also debut a retrospective about Bowie’s 40-year history with the BBC itself, as well as a documentary about one of Bowie’s most famous songs, “Life on Mars.” There are currently no announced plans for BBC to bring its Bowie programming to BBC America or another network, but we’d be shocked if that doesn’t come together fairly quickly.
