New COCO Trailer Charts Pixar’s Musical Journey Through the Land of the Dead

This fall, Pixar is going to cross over to the world of the dead in Coco, the first musical in the company’s history. But Coco isn’t like a lot of the animated fantasy stories that you’ve seen before. It stars Anthony Gonzalez as Miguel Rivera, a young boy living in Mexico, who only dreams about becoming a musician. Unfortunately, Miguel’s family despises music in all its forms and Miguel’s quest to achieve his goal and win their acceptance may literally be the death of him. Coco‘s new trailer has been released, and it offers up a lot of info about how and why Miguel ends up trapped in the Land of the Dead, and what will happen to him if he doesn’t make it out in time.

As you can see in the trailer, Miguel discovers that Mexico’s greatest musician, the late Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt), was also his great-grandfather. But Miguel’s desperate attempt to seize his moment has literally cursed him. Along the way, Miguel will meet the family members who have watched over him from beyond the grave while teaming up with Hector, (Gael García Bernal), a lost soul who also wants to break out of the Land of the Dead. Unfortunately for both of them, Miguel only has a day to get out before he becomes a permanent resident!

The trailer plays out to “Bitter Sweet Symphony,” but the music within the film will have an identity all of its own. And just from the visuals alone, Coco looks like it could be one of Pixar’s best.

Coco will be released in theaters on November 22.
