Pixar’s COCO Trailer Looks Spooky and Beautiful

2017 will feature the rare, special occurrence of two Pixar movies hitting theaters in the same year. Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur both came out in 2015–the first time such a phenomenon has occurred since Pixar’s inception–and now, 2017 will give us both Cars 3 and Coco. The latter has been shrouded in some mystery, since all we’ve seen are a few vague visuals at this point. Today, we finally get our first trailer, and it’s as lovely as it is eerie.

The trailer features Miguel, a young boy who idolizes the late singer and guitar player Ernesto de la Cruz, to the point that we see him lighting candles on a shrine honoring the deceased musician. Sitting in front of the TV, watching an old VHS tape of de la Cruz and playing his own beat up guitar, which he designed to look like his idol’s, he plays along and passionately works on his fingering. This is probably the most attention Pixar’s animators have ever paid to designing and animating fingers, and I imagine we’ll hear more about that in some bonus feature some day.

After visiting de la Cruz’s grave and strumming the singer’s guitar, Miguel is transported to the Land of the Dead. The new world might be morbid, but it is only technically lifeless, as the environment is vibrant, striking, and beautiful. We only get a brief look at it, but we can only imagine the adventure that lies within.

Check out the trailer above, and let us know what you think about this movie’s first look. Does it fill you with life as it does us? Let us know what you think!
