You’ve heard Spielberg say it. You’ve heard Tarantino say it. You’ve heard it said by Paul Thomas Anderson, Christopher Nolan, and the philosophy major in your sophomore hall with the tobacco pipe and the Le Jetée poster: Film is better than digital. A movie shot and projected on 35-millimeter film stock is, as many see it, the only acceptable variant of the medium—far outdoing its computerized alternative in the effort of transporting viewers into the world onscreen. Unfortunately, those of said mindset are finding it tougher and tougher to track down film showings of movies, as most major theaters are trading in traditional projection booths for exclusively digital resources. That said, there are still a healthy number of arthouse theaters devoted to the cause, and now a new means of knowing when they’re gearing up for a show.

No Film School reports that Kodak, the company responsible for creating the bulk of the film used in the Greater Hollywood area, is launching a new app to alert dutiful cineastes to any film screenings coming to their surrounding areas. The app, called Reel Film, will inform users of the dates and locations of any 35mm production, be it a new feature (Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight did a film-specific tour just last year) or the reproduction of an old classic. Additionally, Reel Film has information on film-friendly theaters nationwide, as well as on which contemporary movies were shot on film stock (which, even in absence of nearby film screenings thereof, allows for the doff of your cap to their respective directors).
