Before he was a multi-hyphenated actor/comedian/writer, Jonah Ray was a punk rocker. He began performing with bands in his native Hawaii, then chased the dream to Los Angeles, where he soon gravitated towards those other creative endeavors we better know–and love–him for today. Now, after years of doing the comedy thang and contributing to the Nerdist Podcast, Ray is returning to music, and bringing comedy with him.

Ray is launching his own record label, Literally Figurative Records, to highlight his favorite comedians, musicians, and comedians who, like himself, also happen to be musicians. As an imprint of A Special Things Records, Literally Figuratively will release vinyl of comedians Nick Youssef, Paige Weldon and Matt Dwyer, among many others to come. As Ray explained in his announcement on Tumblr, “I had always thought it would be neat to treat my comedy as if it were a band. By making buttons, stickers, and of course, putting out a 7” record. The 7” record is usually a punk/indie bands first release, and I never got to a point with any of my bands to do it. ”

Now he is finally committing to his passion for vinyl. Literally Figurative Records will  be releasing a particularly intriguing series of split 7” records with a comedian on one side and a band on the other, the two being bound by friendship. The series, called The Mutual Appreciation Society, will feature some stellar double-features, including Jonah Ray himself and Mikal Cronin.
