Neil deGrasse Tyson Blows Minds in Reddit AMA Video

Reddit has just launched their online video series, and one of the first three video-based AMA sessions was with none other than everyone’s personal astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson. The surprising twist is that the video was an AMA based in their r/art subreddit, which one might not immediately find this science rockstar. Not to say that those who have an expertise in science can’t enjoy art, but any time Tyson is involved in a discussion about anything it is usually because of his expertise in astrophysics.

Of course, this did not stop him from giving very insightful answers to questions about his appreciation of art and beauty, nor did it stop him from blowing minds.

At the 6:48 mark in the video, Neil is asked what he would want to see of an alien culture’s art if we discovered life on other planets. After explaining that he’d have far more important questions to ask before getting to art, he touched on the concept that art is created because it serves to please the senses that we perceive the world through. He then offered up the idea that extraterrestrial creatures could have senses that we cannot even comprehend, serving those senses. Yes, art that we as human beings cannot perceive could exist in the galaxy.
