We are truly stoked for the brand new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 to arrive on Netflix in a few short weeks. After a break of 18 years (sweet chocolate cripes, I feel so old) since the last new episode, our bodies and souls are ready for more guy-in-jumpsuit-making-fun-of-weird-movies-flanked-by-robots brilliance. The production has kept a pretty tight lid on any new footage or even images since it was announced over a year ago, but we now have a spiffy 45-second teaser courtesy of Netflix (first shared by Entertainment Weekly) and it’s got us looking forward to the not-too-distant-future.
The teaser doesn’t show too much, aside from what we assume is from the first episode, in which hapless space garbage collector Jonah Heston (Jonah Ray) responds to a distress signal which happens to just be a trap laid by Kinga Forrester (Felicia Day) and her trusty if dim sidekick, TV’s Son of TV’s Frank (Patton Oswalt). We also get to see a few brief clips of the movies that’ll be riffed, which I won’t spoil here, since that was always the number one thing the creators wanted to keep secret. Needless to say, though, I’m jazzed to see HD versions of cruddy old flicks getting riffed like nobody’s business.
The first thing we have to discuss is just how gorgeous the show looks. Obviously, video looks a lot better now than it did in 1999 when the show ended originally, but holy cats, the colors just pop and the sets look extra vibrant. It also doesn’t hurt that Jonah’s yellow jumpsuit is about the brightest thing we’ve ever seen. Similarly, the model shots of Jonah’s Gizmonics Institute and Kinga’s moon base look really great while still retaining the handmade, lo-fi quality of the models from the original show.
