Music Geek Track Of The Week: “Some Place”

Oh goody, it’s my turn to pick track of the week! Lately I’ve noticed a pattern between Matt and myself. We tend to fight over this post because writing TOTW lets us hide behind an alluring façade where we maintain complete control over what song we feel the lovely readers need to hear. While some of this is true — we are the ‘deciders’ — often we find these short and sweet write-ups ridden behind multiple texts, calls and usually a “You suck, I’m going with my original idea.”

This week I was expecting the same; however, Nick Waterhouse fell into my lap. He’s a new addition to the big band revival that’s been hovering lately.  To tell you the truth, I’m not quite certain why it ever left. Who doesn’t love a handful of harmonizing gentlemen in Joel McHale skinny ties while a couple of synchronized ladies sing sultry backup? I REALLY DON’T KNOW.  Artists like Mayer Hawthorne, Fitz and the Tantrums, and Raphael Saadiq have recently snuck up on us, and now Nick Waterhouse is next in line.

He’s definitely the most indie in the bunch. When comparing Waterhouse to others of this genre, he maintains a certain ‘grunge factor’ that doesn’t exist elsewhere.  His low-fi vocals in “Some Place” matched with his bellowing  sax, would fit perfectly in my underground speakeasy located in 1920’s Manhattan.

Doesn’t it just look like so much fun?

With his album coming out in 2012 on Innovative Leisure, home to artist Hanni El Khatib, a vaguely similar artist, Waterhouse is definitely someone to watch for in the upcoming year.

Please follow me on twitter and come to my new NerdMelt show LOUD NOISES on Dec 10th!
