Music Geek Track of the Day: Tragedy’s Metal Cover “You’re The One That I Want”

Sure, you could make an all metal tribute band to the Bee Gees, but what happens when you run through the Gibb boys’ entire 17 album discography? That’s when you take a page from Bed Bath & Beyond’s playbook, and add a little wiggle room in your oddly specific band name. Enter: Tragedy: All Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees and Beyond.

Treating their stage like the Appomattox Court House, this novelty act seeks to unite the two most flamboyant and divisive musical movements on either side of Chicago’s 1979 Disco Demolition Night. With sequenced leather vests and glittery face paint, Tragedy has found an audience in disco-loving metal-heads around the world.

Now, assuming they have exhausted all those 17 Bee Gees albums, the band turns to another icon of disco for inspiration: Saturday Night Fever’s John Travolta. In this ominous and unhinged cover of Grease’s closing track,”You’re the One that I Want”, Tragedy’s Mountain Man gives us his best Danny Zuko impersonation. So take a moment to enroll with us at “Our Lady of Perpetual Decimation High School” (there sure are a lot of students with greying beards at this high school…), and enjoy this absolutely electrifying music video.

For the sake of reference, below is the original film’s version, and I would be remiss not to point you toward some other fantastic covers from the last few years. Also below are (1) The Lenning’s folky cover, made famous by Parenthood, (2) Angus & Julia Stone’s sweetly countrified version, and, my favorite, (3) Lo-Fang’s hauntingly sultry version (which scored him a Chanel ad).

Abel Charrow played DJ Vince Fontaine in his high school’s stage production of ‘Grease’.
