Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘Snug As F—‘ by Liam Finn

Liam Finn is an eclectic indie rocker from New Zealand who, depending on the track and the lighting, channels Unknown Mortal Orchestra, MGMT, The Wallflowers, Connan Mockasin, and Bruce Springsteen. Based upon the diversity of his sonic portfolio, the above gummy worm picture, and the very surreal music video for “Snug As Fuck” — a very solid if slept-on track from earlier in the year — you can sense that Finn identifies with and harnesses childlike imagination and perspective.

“Snug As Fuck” is definitely in the running for one of the best named songs of 2014. As that cool incremental/arpeggiated synth effect kicks in, you feel slowly drawn into the absurd circumstances of the music video in which an extended family celebrate the fictional “Jubilancy Day” by stomping on fruit in their living room, making out, and eating mouse cake. I know it is heretical to say, but I might be more inclined to go with Liam Finn’s holiday over Festivus the next time the holiday season rolls around. It looks like a perfect holiday: being around happy family, stuffing yourself with food, and then curling up to get snug as fuck.

I dunno, this track wouldn’t sound out of place on one of his dad’s solo albums.
