Music Geek Track Of The Day: ‘Say You’ll Be There (Cover)’ by Mø

There is a gimmicky element musicians face when covering any ’90s girl-or-boy “band.” It can be seen as an attempt to go viral, which in any indie-rock case, goes against most hipster morals. Normally, I would agree that selling your soul to the Backstreet Boys is not the way to gain listeners, but a particular case came across my desk a few days ago that I could not ignore.

Mø — Danish singer Karen Marie Ørsted — is my exception to the rule. Her cover of Spice Girls hit, Say You’ll Be There is so good. The arrangement of the song is different enough from the original that there was actually A POINT of doing the cover – an issue many covers fail to overcome. Furthermore, it’s not a dance remix! It’s a swirly-indie-rock remastering of one of the most recognizable songs to any millennial. I hope this cover does what she wants it to do, which I expect is get people to listen to her new album, No Mythologies to Follow.

Bravo, Mø.
