Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘Hot Dad Calendar’ by Cayetana Is An Indie Punk Treat

Cayetana are a Philadelphia based indie punk band who sound like they listened to a lot of Veruca Salt, Hole, and Letters To Cleo before graduating on to riot grrrl bands during their formative years. If you’re particularly caught up on your tracks of the day, I would say their closest contemporaries are Cincinnati’s Tweens or perhaps Nashville’s Bully. To my eyes, the factor that differentiates Cayetana from those bands is the unearthly vocal control of  Augusta Koch, whose wailing sounds like she is constantly on the verge of cracking her voice and potentially destroying her vocal chords altogether.

“Hot Dad Calendar”, aside from being the best named track of the year, has a remarkably explosive, jagged sense of youth. Sure Koch’s bright blue hair and the house party aesthetic of the music video suggest rebellious youthfulness, but it is Cayetana’s uninhibited performance and frenetic energy that makes the track one of the most promising of the year, even at the conclusion of 2014.

Spoiler: you don’t get to see the titular DILF calendar, so sorry if that is all you came to find in this post. But while you are here, might as well listen to your favorite new band.
