Music Geek Track of the Day: Foxygen Move Like Jagger In “Coulda Been My Love”

For L.A.-based duo Foxygen, it appears that summertime sadness has dovetailed languorously in autumnal regret, for their mournfully catchy “Coulda Been My Love”. Foxygen are known for there pastiche-minded shapeshifting (“No Destruction” has very familiar inflections that range from Dylanesque to Jaggeresque)  and this new single sound uncannily like a 70s pop track that could have easily found its way onto the Awesome Mixtape Vol. 1.

Borrowing from the same chord progression form the chorus of Redbone’s “Come And Get Your Love”, Foxygen upends that feel-good sentiment and turns it into a very replayable piano-driven bummer anthem. Summoning that same feelings of isolation while at a social gathering that Kevin Parker sings about in Tame Impala’s “Keep On Lying”, lead singer Sam France refuses to interact with fellow party guests at a very posh, loungey abode somewhere in Hollywood, instead opting to bust out clipped, fabulous moves like Jagger. And if those aren’t enough references for one blog post about music, then you might also appreciate the fact the France’s sport jacket-shirt combo is most certainly an homage to Bryan Ferry’s getup when Roxy Music performed on German TV Show Musikladen in 1973.

But what matters most, perhaps, is that song is infectious (a scary word to use today). Enjoy the track below.
