Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘Dangerous Days’ by Zola Jesus

After teasing us with an album trailer for her forthcoming album Taiga, which will be out October 6, Nika Danilova, a/k/a Zola Jesus, released her surprisingly radio-friendly single, “Dangerous Days,” a gloriously produced bummer anthem. Given her predilection for gothic, angular spaces, I expected a seriously despondent, perhaps industrial, sounding new single, and I am so so excited that I was wayyyy off. This is seriously a hit, from the pulsating four-on-the-floor beat to her ever-ascending voice.

I first played this song on the road with my brother with a snazzy iPhone 5-tape adapter audio situation, and when he heard the vocals and drop he earnestly asked if we were listening to Rihanna. Instinctively I scoffed, but then I quickly realized he honestly wasn’t that far off. Very glad she has let some light in.
