Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘2Shy’ By Shura Is An ’80s Prom Dream Song

“We could be more than friends, but baby I am just too shy,” is the all-too-familiar feeling lyric that makes English singer Shura’s newest track “2Shy” the perfect song for a dance between two “friends” at any senior prom in the 80s. Sure there is definite chemistry between the two, but that just what friendship feels like right?

“NO, IT’S NOT, HAVEN’T YOU SEEN A SINGLE JOHN HUGHES MOVIE?!” you might be screaming at our two theoretical characters. And you are correct–they are young and naive (they could also be idiots–I never specified), too unfamiliar with overcoming the crippling vulnerability of divulging emotions. But there they are, dancing in each other’s arms, summoning the courage to look one another in the eyes. And though the song is a healthy four minutes and forty seconds, neither take the risk–perhaps getting closer is not an option because of the poofiness of her disgusting (hip by the era’s fashion standards) pastel dress. Perhaps they’ve just frozen into the moment. Shura’s stunning voice and the bright synths wash over them, but they just rock cautiously with one another, until the song ends. And though they separate to go find their other friends, the seeds have been planted, because how could they not feel how right it felt?

If you are a young person reading this and making mixes is still a thing you do in high school–put this song first on a playlist and give it to your friend that you’re probably in love with. Don’t wait for 80s prom to let this person know how you feel!
