Movie Morsels: SUICIDE SQUAD Almost Used Harley Quinn’s Original Costume

As much as we’re looking forward to thus summer’s Suicide Squad, today’s Movie Morsels suggests how the film’s Harley Quinn could have been just a little bit cooler. Plus, we have the latest on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Hardcore Henry, and more!

Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad

Yes, it’s true. At one point in Suicide Squad‘s development, someone at Warner Bros. was apparently open to having the title team’s most mirthful member, the mad Miss Harley Quinn, don her original clown costume. The garb was introduced along with the character in the immortal Batman: The Animated Series.

Margot Robbie, who embodies Harley in the film, tells HelloGiggles, “We tried on every variation of the costume. I cannot emphasize enough how many outfits, and how many variations of the Harley Quinn costume we tried. We tried the court jester costume, we tried the corset and skirt, we tried leather pants, we tried literally every type of costume possible for her. I really love where we ended up. And who knows, maybe in the sequels we’ll go with the court jester one. I think there’s a world of possibilities.”

While I find it doubtful that, should Suicide Squad prove a hit, Warner Bros. will want to make such a radical change to Harley’s wardrobe, stranger things have happened. In any case, director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad will arrive on August 5.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

In other DC movie news… We’ve got a new photo from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice today, and it’s the most hardcore image we’ve seen yet from the film. Below, see Batman literally bringing his massive (and presumably Kryptonite-laced) boot down upon Superman’s throat. This is honestly turning out to be the biggest budgeted act of foreplay ever committed to screen…

Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman appears to be the most sensible of the team’s trio of heroes. In a new interview with Glamour, the actress talks about her take on the character…

“It was important for me that we show how independent she is. She is not relying on a man, and she’s not there because of a love story. She’s not there to serve someone else… It’s all her heart — that’s her strength. I think women are amazing for being able to show what they feel. I admire women who do. I think it’s a mistake when women cover their emotions to look tough. I say let’s own who we are and use it as a strength.”

“Feminism,” she adds, “is about equality. I want all people to have the same opportunities and to get the same salaries for the same jobs. I realize I’m doing what I want to do because of the women before me who laid the groundwork. Without them I wouldn’t be an educated working mother who is following her dreams.”

Hardcore Henry

There’s a new trailer for STX’s first-person POV actioner Hardcore Henry online, and the film looks as wonderfully bonkers as it sounds. As the amnesiac title character embarks on a mission to learn his identity and rescue his wife from the clutches of a warlord in the Moscow of the future. Sharlto Copley, Danila Kozlovsky, and Haley Bennett star in writer-director Ilya Naishuller’s April 8 release…

Midnight Special

Finally today, we have three new TV spots for Midnight Special, opening on March 18. Mud helmer Jeff Nichols’ science-fiction film stars Adam Driver, Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst, and Joel Edgerton in the story of a father (Shannon) out to protect his extra-normal, gifted son from the government. From the look of things, and the buzz its generated from critics, Nichols has indeed managed to channel the spirit of ’80s Amblin. Now let’s just hope we don’t get another Super 8
