Movie Morsels: Robert Downey Jr. Talks About Spider-Man in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Happy Friday, everyone! It’s time to wrap up the week’s film news with another installment of Movie Morsels.

In today’s column, we’ve got a double dose of Captain America: Civil War tidbits, a breakdown of the Batman v Superman trailer, Steven Spielberg’s thoughts on recasting Indiana Jones, exclusive interviews with the cast and director of Krampus, Friday the 13th news and the first trailer for Eye in the Sky. Let’s get to it.

Captain America: Civil War

Marvel Studios is still playing coy about whether Tom Holland is making his debut as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. Look, we all know that he is. That was the whole point of the deal between Marvel and Sony Pictures to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But Robert Downey Jr. is the first major MCU actor to go on record about Holland’s appearance in the film.

“[Don] Cheadle and I are just going, ‘Wow, dude, look at this,’” said Downey while speaking with Entertainment Weekly. “We’re now like the old guard, and our storyline carries real weight just because of our history in the [canon]. But we’re also looking around like, ‘Who thought that Falcon and Black Panther and Ant-Man and now Spider-Man…?’ I mean it’s like wow, this thing is just crazy.”

However, Chris Evans seemed to be more reserved about the role of Spider-Man in the film. He confirmed that Holland shot scenes for the movie, but acted as if those scenes could be left out of the final cut.

“You never know with Marvel,” said Evans. “Sometimes they shoot things and then don’t use them.”

Oh, I think we know. Nice try, Chris.

Captain America: Civil War – Bonus Round!

The latest issue of EW also threw the spotlight on Scarlett Johansson and allowed her to elaborate on Black Widow’s role in the conflict between Captain America and Iron Man.

“I think when you find her in Civil War, she’s looking to strategize her position, putting herself in a place where she is able to let the powers that be fight it out or whatever amongst themselves,” said Johansson. “She’s always a little bit on the perimeter so she can have a better perspective of what’s really going on.”

“I don’t think she’s ever aspired to become an Avenger,” added Johansson. “That’s not really a choice that she made. It’s kind of like the events in her life led her to that point and when we see her [in Civil War], she’s finally capable of making a choice for herself…She’s finally at a place where she’s going, ‘Okay, I actually kind of know what I want. And I think I kind of deserve it.’…Unfortunately the events that took place … she has this kind of greater calling and this huge pull towards doing what’s right for the greater good. And she chooses that, and it’s a really heroic thing that she does, I think.”

Captain America: Civil War will be released on May 6, 2016.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Earlier this week, Jimmy Kimmel Live debuted the second trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and there was a lot more of Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor, and a certain Superman bad guy whose name could be considered a major spoiler. It was a pretty jam-packed preview! And there were definitely some Easter Eggs that were easy to miss.

Indiana Jones 5

Remember those rumors about Chris Pratt possibly becoming the new Indiana Jones and taking over the franchise from Harrison Ford? Producer Frank Marshall already poured cold water on that idea earlier this year. Now Indiana Jones director and co-creator Steven Spielberg is weighing in on the topic. And as far as he’s concerned, adventure only has one name.

Indiana Jones large

“I don’t think anyone could replace Harrison as Indy, I don’t think that’s ever going to happen,” said Spielberg. “It’s certainly not my intention to ever have another actor step into his shoes in the way there have been many actors that have played Spider-Man or Batman. There is only going to be one actor playing Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford.”

Sure…but is there only one actor who can play Indy’s son? Or can we pretend that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull never happened?

Krampus

Today, Legendary’s holiday horror movie, Krampus is bringing the Christmas vengeance to all of the naughty children. Ahead of the movie’s nationwide release, Nerdist senior editor Dan Casey interviewed Krampus director Michael Dougherty about the inherent horror of Christmas, and turning the Christmas movie genre on its head.

Dan also spoke with the stars of the film: Adam Scott, Toni Collette, and Allison Tolman, as they shared their picks for a Christmas double feature with Krampus and another movie. They also touched upon one of the film’s unsolved mysteries.

Friday the 13th

Earlier this year, The CW put a Friday the 13th TV series into development, but Paramount Pictures hasn’t given up on bringing Jason Voorhees back for the 13th Friday the 13th feature film. Towards that end, Aaron Guzikowski (Contraband) has been signed to write a new draft of the latest Friday the 13th movie. The studio is keeping the story details “under wraps,” as if they expect anyone to believe that the film won’t revolve around Jason stalking and killing nubile teens near Camp Crystal Lake.

But Paramount’s going to need another director. David Bruckner has departed the project, reportedly due to the constant delays. The new tentative release date for the next Friday the 13th is January 13, 2017.

Eye in the Sky

The future of warfare may be in the hands of drone pilots. And in turn, director Gavin Hood’s new movie, Eye in the Sky, may be one of the first films to dramatize drone warfare. Helen Mirren stars in the movie as Colonel Katherine Powell, the commander of the UK’s drone program who learns about a potential terrorist suicide attack. Former Breaking Bad co-leading man Aaron Paul co-stars in Eye in the Sky as drone pilot, Steve Watts, who refuses to fire the drone’s weapons when a little girl enters the kill zone of the terrorist safe house.

Eye in the Sky

Bleecker Street has released the first trailer for Eye in the Sky, which will have a limited theatrical release on March 11, 2016.
