Things Get Weird and Freaky for Jennifer Lawrence in New MOTHER! Trailer

Jennifer Lawrence‘s film roles have run the gamut of genres, but she’s rarely touched upon horror. That’s going to change in a big way starting next month in Mother!, the latest movie by director Darren Aronofsky. And Lawrence won’t be alone.

The latest trailer for Mother! has been released, and it establishes the quiet and peaceful life that Lawrence’s character shares with her husband, as played by Javier Bardem. They appear to live in a remote part of the country in a home that still needs some work. Lawrence and Bardem’s characters appear to be happy until an enigmatic stranger (Ed Harris) shows up with his wife (Michelle Pfeiffer), and somehow convinces the couple to let them stay. From there, things get a little weird.

If we had to guess, the biggest influence appears to be Rosemary’s Baby, since the focus is clearly on Lawrence’s character as she deals with scares both real and possibly imagined. Note that Bardem’s character doesn’t appear to be at all unsettled when these strangers roam his house freely. He doesn’t even seem to be upset when they turn out to have a picture of him in their luggage. Instead, he enigmatically declares that they are there to see him.

But the biggest red flags come late in the trailer, when Harris and Pfeiffer’s characters appear to have drawn a much bigger crowd to the house. That definitely screams cult, but we’re not sure how much of this is real and how much of it is within the mind of Lawrence’s character. We’ll learn more when Mother! is released on September 15.
