The “Drone Blender” Just Made FRUIT NINJA a Real Thing

With all the kerfuffle about drones these days, I don’t know how we never thought of doing this. Hoping to summon a bit of real-life Fruit Ninja, UK production house Speed Motion Films sent a cascade of comestibles into the spinning blades of a DJI Phantom quadcopter, essentially turning it into a blender.

Despite all the slicing and dicing wizardry, commenters seem largely distracted by the fact that the drone is destroyed at the end of the video. The team assures us, however, that no working machines were harmed in the making of this clip. “It was already broken and non-working,” they say. “We literally put it together barebones just for this shoot. Welcome to the world of YouTube!”

Among the sacrificed snacks are a sausage, eggs, a plastic container of yogurt, and a zucchini. Some “bombs” do manage to make their way to the ground unscathed, but when you consider that the DJI’s motor can muster just over 11,000 RPM at maximum operating voltage – that’s half the rotational power of a real Ninja blender, which boast an impressive 24,000 RPM – we’re giving the ‘copter an “A” for effort. (Whether or not anyone would want to eat the resulting concoction is another story.)

The video was shot at 1,500 frames per second using the Phantom Miro camera, but before you decide to recreate the stunt for yourself, you should know the slow-mo capturing tech costs about $60,000. The obvious next step is to unite the drone blender with this flame-throwing, turkey-roasting, drone. Holiday meal prep, anyone?
