MONOPOLY is Releasing a Special “Cheaters Edition”

Despite the old saying, sometimes cheaters do prosper. Like Uncle Jerry, who we knew was keeping an ace at the bottom of his deck for when we went to War even though we could never prove it. And if you adhere to the old adage that if you ain’t cheating you ain’t trying, Hasbro has just the game for you, a very special edition of Monopoly designed to reward shady players.

Monopoly Cheaters Edition, which we learned about at Insider, will embrace the darker side of the classic board game, which Hasbro Senior Vice President Jonathan Berkowitz said a recent study showed almost half of all players try to cheat at already. “We decided it was time to give fans what they’ve been craving all along – a Monopoly game that actually encourages cheating.” That strangely sounds like a lot of fun, but how do you formalize cheating?

While players will still have to pursue the usual goals of an ordinary Monopoly game, there will be 15 cheat cards that will entice players to do nefarious things along the way. Among these options: stealing properties, robbing the bank, skipping spaces, covertly placing or removing hotels, shorting your rent payment while claiming rents for spaces you don’t own, and moving other players’ tokens.

Five of the cards will be placed on the middle of the board, and if someone successful pulls off one of the cheats, they will earn rewards. However, if they are caught they will be punished and possibly go to jail where they will be handcuffed. No, seriously, the game comes with handcuffs. The rewards and punishments are listed on the back of the cheat cards.

And to encourage the shenanigans further there is no longer one official banker, so you’ll have to be on your toes at all times. They’ve also “hacked” some properties so you don’t even have to pay for them if you’re the first to land on them.

It’s basically a structured free-for-all where the most sinister, cunning, and covert cheater among your group will win. As you can imagine we can’t wait to play it this fall when it hit stores. Although we aren’t inviting Uncle Jerry over for game night. That guy’s too good at cheating without someone encouraging him.

Do you want to play this version of the game? Don’t cheat us out of your thoughts, share them with us in the comments below.
