This is an interesting idea by a blogger and former Drake University student, brought to my attention by a Facebook post from a radio friend of mine, Matt Perrault at KXNO in Des Moines. Now, since we don’t know the student in question and don’t know if she really wants a lot of participants who she doesn’t know, and since there’s short notice, I don’t know that we want to swamp her with entries. No endorsement, either, just reporting here. But if you’re game for it, contact her, and if not, read to the end of this post anyway. First, here’s the concept:
It’s a Mixtape Exchange. You sign up by e-mailing her by January 8th. You put together your favorite tunes of 2010, one song per artist, trying for 60 minutes of music. You burn a CD with the music. She matches you with a mixtape buddy and sends you their address (and yours to them). You ship the CD by January 27th, trading with your buddy. That’s it.
Interesting, huh? But you don’t need to participate in the actual mixtape exchange process to put together your list of what would be on your mixtape. You can just post the lists right here in the comments. And while if you do participate in her exchange, you’ll need to stick to 2010, we don’t have to have that rule here, since it’s not a contest or exchange and you’re not actually making the tape (unless you want to); it’s just for fun.
So… you get to fill one hour with the best music you know for a friend. What would be on your Ultimate Mixtape? Post it right here.

This is a fantastic idea. It’s been a personal project of mine to compile some songs into mixtapes every season this past year. They’re not curated into “Best Of” mentality, but a celebration of a spectrum of music at a given time.
My most recent mixtape features jj, keren ann, iron and wine, keri hilson, the go! team, j. nolan, the suzan and asobi seksu. You can download a zip of it via mediafire here: http://tinyurl.com/heywinter — If you haven’t heard of some of them, give it a download.
But if I were to include a Best of 2010, Sleigh Bells, Arcade Fire, of Montreal, The New Pornographers, The Hundred in the Hands, Tennis, and The Hood Internet would all have spots somewhere.

Word up, BigJB. I’m having a hard time picking it down to just one disc’s worth.

There was a lot of good music in 2010! If you didn’t listen to anything new, why comment?
Nuts. I didn’t buy enough 2010 releases to qualify for a 60 minute mix. Any chance I can do another year?
Give me a few minutes, I’ll set one up and throw the list on dropbox for people to peruse
a friend of mine has organized one of these the last three years and it’s turned out to be a really fun thing to be a part of. every year a network of friends of friends (between 20 and 30) put together a mixtape that could be anything you want (fav new songs, themes, classics, original) and every year it’s gotten more creative with lots of original artwork and interesting packaging of the cds. mixtape swap = highly enjoyable.
Was there even enough decent music in 2010 to fill a 60 minute mixtape?
WOW. I made the nerdlist? Awesome.
Mixtape exchange is open to ANYONE. So excited to get participants.
A couple things:
– You should consider endorsing the exchange? I know. I thought it was a good idea too.
– I can link you to the playlists participants send me– that I hope will be received by Jan. 27th.
Deadline for sign up is the 8th– email me with any questions!
(THANK YOU for getting the word out!)
