  1. Alec says:

To tack on to the arguments made about technology making war both more immediate and more remote- one of the disturbing trends of the last few wars the US has led is the way they’ve been promoted as letting the average citizen live out their days normally. Sure, friends and relatives of soldiers are worried sick, but there’s no draft, no rationing, no commandeering of the civilian economy, and no new taxes to pay for it. It’s presented as tidy and sustainable.

Cell phones that let people communicate and send footage from almost anywhere are becoming ubiquitous. You don’t need a reporter with a satellite van- Skype can get the job done now. Of course, giving the right citizen journalists the spotlight it still hard- and from the way traditional news organizations are handling things, less profitable than repeating wire stories. I know you guys don’t let to get ahead of things, but DS9’s Past Tense did a good job of examining that angle.

Somebody needs to do a skit of Bill Shatner talking Siri to death before shooting a bunch of iPads and MacBooks.
