In J.R.R. Tolkien‘s Middle-Earth, there can only be one Lord of the Rings…and it may no longer be Sauron. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor introduced gamers to Talion, a ranger who fell to Sauron’s forces before he was resurrected and merged with the vengeful spirit of an elf lord named Celebrimbor. Together, Talion and Celebrimbor have created a new ring of power, and their conquest of Mordor will unfold in the upcoming sequel, Middle-Earth: Shadow of War.
At the Xbox E3 2017 presentation, an advance look at Middle-Earth: Shadow of War demonstrated the updated Nemesis system that will allow Talion to forcibly recruit orcs to his side in the battle against Sauron. Talion has even come to be called “the bright lord” in contrast to Sauron’s dark lord. Gamespot has posted the Shadow of War E3 demo, which includes a battle with a massive orc known as Bruz the Chopper.
We expected the game to be action-packed and exciting, but we had no idea that it could be a buddy comedy as well. Bruz was already quite funny before he was coerced into the Bright Lord’s service. Once Bruz was forced to join Talion, he became even funnier and there’s even some really hilarious banter between the orc and his new boss. Bruz’s personality is so strong that he actually overshadows Talion in his own game with memorable lines and deft comedic timing. If the rest of the orcs are this entertaining to watch, then it’s going to be hard letting any of them slip from Talion’s control.
A new trailer for Shadow of War has also debuted, which reveals that Sauron is taking Talion’s threat very seriously. As well he should, since the new ring of power is unblemished by Sauron’s touch. All of the Nazgul have been summoned to deal with Talion, but it will still probably come down to a battle between Sauron and his new nemesis to determine the fate of Mordor and all who live there. Of course, that’s assuming that Talion can hold on to whatever humanity he has left.
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War will be released on Xbox One and Playstation 4 on October 10.
