Meet Roxy, a Life-Sized Rancor Model

If you were out at Star Wars Celebration over the past weekend, you saw quite a few things that might have taken your breath away. Among the teases for upcoming movies, reveals for upcoming video games, and a sea of cosplayers there sat the wonder that is Roxy The Rancor.

Our friends over at Tested had a chance to talk to Roxy’s co-creator, Matt Paisley, about the process of building Roxy and the impact she has had at all the events she appears at across the country. It is no surprise to know she has appeared at the previous Star Wars Celebration, as well as other conventions and even Star Wars Weekends at Disney. What is surprising is how many charity and awareness events she makes an appearance at. I never knew a Rancor could be such a draw for Unicef.

Roxy is a 1,000-pound life-sized model created by Paisley and the team at Pizzazz Scenic, with permission and referential help from LucasFilm, for the 501st Bash in Florida during Star Wars Celebration VI. Roxy is crafted from 1-pound EPS sculpting foam on top of a wood-shaped frame, and is moved by Paisley and crew after being disassembled into eight separate pieces: head, both arms, both legs, body, tail, and her claw. While set up, though, Roxy is available for photos with whoever would like one, even with some familiar faces.

As we get closer to Episode VII, I’m sure Roxy is going to be working overtime with appearances at conventions and Star Wars events all over the country; maybe even internationally. I’d bet she’ll be appearing at one if not both Comic-Cons this year.

Did you see Roxy at Celebration? Hoping to see her at a different event this year? Let us know in the comments below.
