Hitting play on “freddy’s dead,” the quick-lipped tribute to the hilariously scary A Nightmare on Elm Street films, we resume right where mc chris left off on his last album mc chris foreverrr. With his signature child-like, nasally delivery, the Midwestern rapper jumps in over a thumping synth line and chops it up about the beloved horror films. Though the main narrative of this track is absurd, the best moments are his pop culturally imbued asides: “Freddy was a cutter, kinda like Kylo.” As with any of his songs, you are rewarded if you pay super close attention to every rhyme he spits.
The single will appear on mc chris’s new Freddy Krueger-themed album mc chris is Dreaming, which drops on September 30. In anticipation of the record, we emailed with mc chris about his new project and asked him if he would ever consider writing a rap tribute to Harambe. Check out what he had to say below.
Nerdist: What do you hope people take away form the latest mc chris album?
MC Chris: I hope they feel more courageous, especially when it comes to acknowledging and facing their fears. While researching the new album, I started to look up to the female characters in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies who just end up being these bad asses pretty much every time. They start out afraid then they master their fears and use them against Freddy. I hope everyone realizes that they just have to stop being afraid of Freddy and then they will have super dream ninja powers. Like instantly.
N: Do you think current rap stars have borrowed your style?
MC: Hip hop with nerdy references in it has been around as long as hip hop. Sugar Hill Gang was talking about Superman in the first big rap song ever, Rapper’s Delight. Wu Tang had tons of Marvel references. Eminem’s earliest songs are about him reading comics and listening to Tribe. We were basically the same person. I think rappers are more likely to be nerds. It requires a love of the language, an addiction to word play and being well read (even if all you’re reading is comics.) Ever since Rami’s Spider-man and LOTR, being a nerd has been this mainstream thing that everyone enjoys. And a new generation has grown up in that nerd friendly climate; the result is even the biggest rappers making a reference here and there.
N: What has MC Pee Pants been up to for the last few years?
MC: He’s actually doing really well running various pyramid schemes. It was actually his idea for Donald Trump to run for President of the United States. The original campaign slogan was “Make America Grizzate Again.” But they shortened it. I guess if Trump wins, they build a wall, and that provides some much needed shade for where he keeps his rented patio furniture. He always goes about things in a kinda roundabout way.
N: Would you ever write a rap tribute to Harambe?
MC: As you know Harambe died for our sins. I was raised to believe in Harambe and I totally did 100%. But Iâve grown up since then and these days Iâm pretty much an Atheist who thinks Harambe was more of a turn of the century doomsday prophet. That being said Harambe said some cool stuff that was very loving, and accepting, stuff I still live by, even though I donât believe in him anymore. Whatâs disturbing to me is to see people who call themselves followers of Harambe using his name to carry out their own hateful and bigoted agendas. Thatâs when Iâm like do you even remember who Harambe was?
