Earlier this year, Matthew McConaughey was rumored to be up for the role of Norman Osborn in the Spider-Man reboot, and he was reportedly offered the lead villain part in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which he turned down. But perhaps McConaughey will portray another iconic bad guy in the near future.

According to Variety, Sony Pictures is closing in on McConaughey to play the demonic sorcerer Walter Padick in the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. Within that novel series, Padick was also known as The Man in Black, and the character resurfaced in King’s The Stand while using the alias Randall Flagg. According to the initial report, the script for the first Dark Tower film has been sent to McConaughey, and the studio is awaiting his response.

McConaughey won the Oscar for Best Actor in 2013 for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club, which was followed by his mesmerizing performance in the first season of HBO’s True Detective. McConaughey’s career resurgence has been dubbed “The McConaissance,” and he is slated to star in the upcoming films The Free State of Jones and Gold.

The first book in King’s Dark Tower series was The Gunslinger, which was published in 1982. Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner have already finished the script for the first Dark Tower movie, which will be based on The Gunslinger. Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Erica Huggins are also slated to executive produce The Dark Tower films. MRC is also developing a Dark Tower TV series that will tie into the films.
