Marvel’s Thanos Seeks the Phoenix Force in New Ongoing Series

Thanos may currently be rotting away in a holding cell during Civil War II, but Marvel can’t hold the Mad Titan down for long! Ahead of San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel has revealed that Thanos is getting a new ongoing series from writer Jeff Lemire and artist Mike Deodato.

ComicBook.com broke the story in an interview with Lemire, in which he said that all of the previous Thanos stories will be an inspiration for his new series, including Jim Starlin‘s classic tales (and even the previous Thanos series by Starlin and Keith Giffen that reintroduced Star-Lord to the Marvel Universe). This time, however, the cover image from Marvel suggests that Thanos is turning his eye towards the Phoenix Force.

The Phoenix Force last had a host during the Secret Wars event, but a fragment of the Phoenix recently showed up in Guardians of Infinity. If Thanos ever gets control of it, he would once again have God-like powers.

Lemire also noted that Thanos’ most compelling characteristics are the fact that “he is so powerful and so evil. This combination opens things up for a lot of story potential. But the truth is that it’s Thanos’ past that makes him so interesting. What motivates a god-like being like this? What makes him tick and what does he have left to fight for? These are compelling questions to me, and I think to the reader. But above all this series just has so much potential. Thanos can essentially become Marvel’s Darth Vader…its alpha villain.” He also added that Thanos’ relationship with Death has changed, and he now has “nothing left to lose.”

The Thanos series will launch this fall.
