By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth, it’s time for comic book movie fans to embrace the supernatural side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the very first trailer for Doctor Strange! Benedict Cumberbatch was the featured guest of tonight’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and his Doctor Strange footage did not disappoint!
Do you remember what a huge jerk Tony Stark was before he became Iron Man? He had nothing on Doctor Stephen Strange, as played by Cumberbatch. Strange was a supremely arrogant surgeon who only cared about himself before a car accident took away his ability to perform surgery. The trailer offers some callbacks to Strange’s classic comic book origin, including his early encounter with Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One, seen here rockin’ a chrome-dome and literally knocking Strange’s astral form out of his body.
The trailer also offers up tantalizing glimpses of Strange’s unfolding introduction to the world of magic and his assent to the rank of Earth’s foremost supernatural defender: the Sorcerer Supreme. And we’ve got to add that we’re loving the Steve Ditko-esque depiction of Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum. There’s a pretty good chance that we’ll have a lot more to say about this trailer in tomorrow’s episode of Nerdist News.
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Mads Mikkelsen co-star in Doctor Strange, which was directed by Scott Derrickson. Doctor Strange will cast its spell on moviegoers on Friday, November 4.
