Hasbro’s Marvel Studios Tenth Anniversary Toy Line Is Plastic Perfection

As good as Hasbro‘s movie-based Marvel Legends toys are now–and they have gotten really, really good in this past year–they have not always been so throughout the history of Marvel Studios films. During Age of Ultron and Iron Man 3, for example, the focus was on much smaller, 3-inch figures. When the first Iron Man movie came out, the Tony Stark toy looked more like Eddie Izzard than Robert Downey Jr. And for the first Avengers movie, while there were six-inch figures made, they were part of a Walmart exclusive line that tended to sell out immediately.

But for toy collectors, all is now right with the world, as a new tenth anniversary line is going back and making figures that, in many cases, either never got their due or were tough to get your hands on. Ten boxes for ten years: some of them are single figures, some two or three packs, and at least one oversized item: Hulk versus Hulkbuster Iron Man. Sorry, all you collectors who bought figures you didn’t want just to build him that Iron Man before. And yes, that is a Gwyneth Paltrow action figure, and it should put to rest the notion that female toys based on Iron Man 3 would hypothetically not sell.

The ten sets are as follows: Tony Stark/Iron Man Mk 1, Red Skull with extra heads to make Hydra Troopers, Thor/Sif, Avengers Iron Man, Iron Man/Pepper Potts/Mandarin (Kingsley), Hulk vs. Hulkbuster, Ronan the Accuser, Ant-Man/Yellowjacket, Captain America/Crossbones, and an as-yet unrevealed Infinity War set that the box art heavily implies might be Doctor Strange and Thanos.

Many of these will be retailer exclusives, with Target, Toys R Us, Walmart, and GameStop all involved. In addition, while not part of the anniversary series, there will be two packs for Ant-Man and the Wasp (with alternate actor-likeness heads) and Black Panther.

Okay, it’s not quite everyone I wanted–where are my new Black Widow, Hawkeye, Iron Patriot, and Mickey Rourke Whiplash figures?–but it fills in a lot of significant gaps in the collection, and proves Hasbro are now, in fact, able to capture Chris Evans’ and Robert Downey Jr.’s likenesses.

The Cap/Crossbones set and Avengers Iron Man are up for preorder now at Amazon, and if Amazon’s prices are a guide, there’s going to be a $5 price increase, compensated for with deluxe boxed packaging and “premium detail.” The hip joints on the Iron Man figures do look to be much-improved, and that Agent Coulson suit-and-tie body is yielding great rewards.
