Marvel Reveals UNCANNY INHUMANS, OLD MAN LOGAN, and More at SDCC

A packed crowd of Marvel fans gathered at San Diego Comic-Con to hear about some of the upcoming X-Men and Inhumans comic books launching from the publisher this fall. Writers Charles Soule, Jeff Lemire, Cullen Bunn, and Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso were on hand to briefly discuss the new titles and give some insight into what the Marvel Universe would look like post Secret Wars.

First up was All-New X-Men from Dennis Hopeless and Mark Bagley. “This series is telling stories of these charcters making peace with the world after Secret Wars,” Axel Alonso said. He noted that it was a fun, adventure-type book, and the cover which features the young X-Men characters piled in a VW bus would seem to confirm that.

Next was Extraordinary X-Men (which is strangely not titled X-Traordinary X-Men) by Jeff Lemire and Humberto Ramos. “It’s a much more dangerous place for mutantkind,” Lemire said of the post-Secret Wars Marvel Universe. “In the wake of that, Storm is taking up Xavier’s mantle. It’s gonna be a desperate and really hard road for muntantkind.” Artist Humberto Ramos expressed how happy he was to be drawing a team book and that he felt like he has lots of freedom to create new, dynamic looks, and scenes.  Charles Soule chimed in to say he had read the first issue and loved it. “It’s amazing,” he said. Extraordinary X-Men is set to launch on October 14th.

The discussion then moved to Old Man Logan, which is being handled by the former Green Arrow creative team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino. “This gonna be great,” Lemire said with a large smile. He told the audience that he believed that Old Man Logan was one of Marvel’s coolest characters and that moving him to the Marvel Universe proper was going to be awesome. He also said that he loved writing a Logan who was being forced to deal with people he had killed in his own timeline/world. “This is a Logan who slaughtered the X-Men and now he is being forced to interact with them again,” Lemire said.

Next up was All-New Wolverine, which sees X-23 talking up the role of the title character. “You guys told us you were really sick of Logan and we listened,” Alonso laughed. “I love the way that this book can coexist and compliment what Lemire is doing on Old Man Logan.” He noted that it still had the feel of a Wolverine title, but would present new and interesting challenges. “I hope you guys all give it a shot,” Alonso said.

Uncanny X-Men by Cullen Bunn and Greg Land is going to be a villain-centric title. “It’s a dangerous time for mutants, I wanted to put together a team that is just as dangerous as the threats they are facing,” Bunn said. He noted that after spending some many issues with Magneto in the character’s recent solo series he felt too attached to the character to not use him.  “They are upholding Xavier’s dream, but they don’t have any right to do so,” Bunn said. With a laugh, he said that if Sabretooth is the moral compass you slight have a problem. Jeff Lemire suddenly chimed into the conversation and said he had a question for Bunn: “How does it feel that Magik could kick everyone’s ass on your team?” Bunn could only shake his head as the audience erupted into laughter and applause.

Last up was Uncanny Inhumans from Charles Soule and Steve McNiven. “Steve and I are simpatico in a very special way,” Soule said, noting that working on The Death of Wolverine with McNiven was an amazing experience. “His art just nails it. Steve hits emotions every time,” he continued.  After Death of Wolverine, the two creators were looking for something to do together again and Uncanny Inhumans came along which seemed like a great fit. Generally speaking, Soule said the series would deal with kings and queens in the sky who must adjust to new Inhumans causing an upheaval of the royal structure. “People were working at Subway and now they have powers,” Soule explained. He stressed that they are trying to tell the most epic story they can tell and thinks that longtime Inhuman fans and new readers will find lots to love in the new series.
