After this summer’s Secret Wars comes to a close, Marvel Comics is re-launching their line of comics (but NOT rebooting their universe, despite earlier rumors) under the banner “All-New, All-Different” Marvel. One of the first re-launched books will be the all-new, all-different Captain Marvel series, coming to us from the same writers who also happen to be the showrunners behind Marvel Television’s excellent Agent Carter, Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas. The duo are taking over for writer Kelly Sue DeConnick, who is departing to focus on a development deal that she and husband Matt Fraction have with Universal. Joining them on art duties is Kris Anka, who is streamlining Captain Marvel’s look, without completely changing her costume.

The new series will feature Carol Danvers running a space station designed to be the first line of defense against any alien threats to Earth.

According to Fazekas, “Marvel really wanted us to design what her mission is within the universe; We know what S.H.I.E.L.D.’s mission is, we know what the Avengers’ mission is, we know what Guardians of the Galaxy’s mission is. So how does Captain Marvel fit into all that?”

Captain Marvel’s new mission will effectively replace S.W.O.R.D., the Marvel Universe’s former “first line of defense against aliens”. The first storyline deals with a ghost ship of unknown origin arriving in Earth’s orbit.

Captain Marvel’s costume will also be slightly different, although it won’t be the top-to-bottom redesign she received a few years back.

According to Tara Butters, “We’ve slightly modified her costume to kind of reflect her new status quo. There’s been a lot of controversy about Carol Danvers’ haircut. We really wanted to make sure it was consistent and streamlined. Last year I think a lot of people couldn’t get her hairstyle—sometimes it was short, sometimes it was long—so we went in and designed exactly what she would look like. Kris really wanted to go shorter, because he felt it aligned with what her new look is all about.”

Michele Fazekas also added, “She’s military, she’s not going to have this huge mane of hair. It needs to be practical.” Not sure how practical a sash is, but I don’t care, it looks fabulous.

Captain Marvel is one of the rare female spin-off characters of a male superhero who long ago surpassed her male counterpart in popularity and importance to the Marvel universe, to the point of effectively replacing the male hero who she was inspired by. The character has grown in popularity at Marvel as of late, with a Captain Marvel movie scheduled for 2019. (Speaking of the movie, notice how much does the redesign look like Charlize Theron? Coincidence? I think not.)

Says writer Tara Butters, “We love the fact that she wanted to be a test pilot, someone who tests boundaries; I feel that’s brought into her superhero character, where she’s pushing herself. Sometimes she takes risks that she shouldn’t take.”

The new Captain Marvel #1 hits comics shops this fall.
