Marvel at This HARRY POTTER Sword of Gryffindor Recreation

A thousand years ago, Godric Gryffindor—one of the four founders of Hogwarts—commissioned a sword made of silver and rubies from the goblin king, Ragnuk the First, the finest magical metalworker in the world. Enchanted and beautiful, the Sword of Gryffindor would one day be used by both Harry Potter to kill the basilisk of Salazar Slytherin and by Neville Longbottom to kill the last horcrux of Lord Voldemort, his snake Nagini. Unfortunately (and unfairly!) for those of us at that are not wizards and witches, we are unlikely to be chosen successors of Godric Gryffindor, which means we will never get our own hands on that stunning and important artifact.

But at least we might have a chance to hold a gorgeous replica, crafted not by goblins, but by a very skilled team of Muggles.

This video comes from the YouTube channel AWE me, and it features the folks from Man at Arms: Reforged, the team of craftsmen responsible for recreating some of our favorite fictional items. This time, the gang cast their magic to conjure up a detailed replica (of the movie version) of the Sword of Gryffindor as part of the buildup and celebration for the upcoming release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

There are two main elements to this build. The first is on the sword itself, where we get to see how a round tube of 1045 steel gets heated, pounded, shaped, smoothed, and sharpened into a real working weapon (one that can be relied on when you are waging war with Dark Wizards). Or, you know, when you feel like going into the backyard and stabbing He Who Shall Not Be Named in the head.

Now while we will never ever get tired of watching a blacksmith ply his trade by making a super cool sword (not only is it nuts to see the skill needed to make a high quality, great looking sword today, it’s amazing to think about all of the craftsmen over the centuries that did this without the benefit of power tools), what really makes this special is the second component of this sword, the intricate and detailed handle.

The Sword of Gryffindor has multiple carvings (this is some real deep Harry Potter fan nerd stuff here), including a unicorn, lightning bolts, a wizard, and of course a griffin. The team shows us how they carved it, shaped it with wax, created a mold, and ultimately cast it in silver, just like the actual sword, to give the sword the elegance and beauty of the real one. (Although, instead of rubies, they made their replica gems out of glass.)

This might not have been conjured with magic, but we’re just as awed.

So yes, we regular old non-magical people will never get to wield the real Sword of Gryffindor, but at least we Muggles have enough skill to make a replica so good it could fool Bellatrix Lestrange herself into storing it in her vault at Gringotts Wizarding Bank.

What other item from the Harry Potter universe would you like to see the Man At Arms: reforged team tackle next? What about another fictional item? Cast your best suggestions in our comments below.
