A STRANGER THINGS Kid Battles a Haunted House in the MARROWBONE Trailer

We recently reported Stranger Things 3 will only include eight episodes, which should free up Charlie Heaton to lend his haunting features to more horror films like this one.

Marrowbone, the directorial debut of The Orphanage and The Impossible writer Sergio G. Sánchez, releases in theaters and digitally on April 13 and stars Heaton as one of four siblings hiding a deadly secret in order to stay together in a dilapidated estate. Family solidarity is inspiring, right? Bad news, though. There’s a dark spirit who’s not that happy about them staying in the house.

Including Heaton (who gets to use his natural British accent), the cast is a tour of up-and-coming young talent, including George MacKay (Captain Fantastic), Anya Taylor-Joy (The VVitch), and Mia Goth (A Cure For Wellness). If the trailer is an accurate vision into the world of the film, we’re in for a country ride that’s far more atmospheric and jump scare-heavy. The whole set up and the lines about sticking together evoke a “We Have Always Lived in the Castle” vibe, with Taylor-Joy playing a curious outsider getting close to a potentially dangerous family. Or are the orphaned kids innocent? Misunderstood weirdos longing for and deserving of our sympathy?

We’ll have to see. Sánchez has delivered several stirring stories as a writer–stories particularly focused on families holding tight while being ripped apart. It will be interesting to see whether he can deliver as a director, too. Fortunately, Marrowbone features cinematography from seasoned DP Xavi Giménez, who created grisly portraits and landscapes for The Machinist, Transsiberian, and the criminally underseen Intacto. If nothing else, it should be gorgeous, but The Orphanage is an indication that Sánchez can bring the ghost story goods.

What are your initial impressions of Marrowbone? Share them in the comments.
