MARIO KART 8 is Even More Gorgeous When Compared to its 64 Counterpart

Friday is finally here, which means it’s time to game. This weekend, I’ll be spending my time saving more settlements in Fallout 4. Microsoft has also released more backwards compatible games, so I’ll be dabbling in those as well. What are you guys planning on tackling this weekend? Now is definitely the time to catch up on some of the backlog from last year.

Now, on to the news of the day. In today’s Gaming Daily, check out a cool Mario Kart comparison video, a new Attack on Titan video game clip surfaces, Ubisoft and Elijah Wood partner up for a virtual reality project, Destiny is celebrating Valentine’s Day in style, and Microsoft adds 10 more backwards compatible games to the Xbox One.

MarioKart

Mario Kart 64/8 video comparison.

There’s no doubt that Mario Kart 8 is one of the prettiest games on the Wii U, but how much has the series evolved, in terms of graphics, since the Nintendo 64 installment? Wonder no more friends, the good folks over at Nintendo Life decided to post a video comparison between the two aforementioned titles. Peep the video above.

The clip is great because it compares the same maps, so we get a better sense of the graphical evolution. I have to say, Nintendo really knows how to create great aesthetics. Mario Kart 8‘s Rainbow Road is gorgeous, and the same goes for the rest of the maps, which are even livelier than the ones in the 64 version. The details of the karts themselves is also incredibly impressive in the latest racer.

I like this clip especially because so many people these days get all worked up about the difference in resolution. It’s important to take a step back and realize how lucky we are as gamers in the year 2016.

New Attack on Titan video game footage surfaces.

Koei Tecmo has released yet another video clip showcasing more of the high-octane action. We even get a glimpse of some important story moments! Check out the video above to see what I mean. The more I see of this game, the more excited I get. Everything looks so fluid, and the action looks pretty great. Of course, we’ll see how it plays once it releases. The game is slated to release this February in Japan, so hopefully fans in NA don’t have to wait too long to get a localized version.

Elijah Wood Open Windows

Ubisoft joins forces with Elijah Wood’s company for a VR project.

Ubisoft, more specifically, Fun House, has partnered up with the well-known Lord of the Rings actor, Elijah Wood and his company, SpectreVision, to make virtual reality games. This might sound odd at first, but Wood’s company uses different mediums (now including video games) to “tell heartfelt, character-driven stories tackling real emotional and social issues that test the boundaries of the genre space.,” according to their site. So, really, it’s not a strange pairing at all. Here’s what Elijah Wood had to say in a report from IGN:

“As a longtime gamer, I’m first and foremost a fan and admirer of Ubisoft. So, to be collaborating with them within the realm of VR is an incredible treat!”

I do think that story driven games are going to become much more essential when VR is finally available to the masses. This genre has the most potential with the current technology. This is why I want filmmakers to delve into this medium. Guillermo del Torro has been trying to make a game for so long, and now, he has the perfect platform to create something. One thing is for sure, VR is here to stay.

Destiny-Crimson-Days-01222016

Destiny is celebrating Valentine’s Day in style.

Yes, the day of love is soon approaching. But worry not, because Bungie has your back this year. The developer has announced that “Crimson Days” is coming to Destiny on February 9, and will continue for one full week. During this time, the Tower will take a much more vibrant look, and a new 2v2 mode, dubbed “Crimson Doubles,” will be introduced. This new mode will have new gameplay and mechanics. It’s a nice alternative if you don’t want to go spend a bunch of cash on dinner come V-Day.

Microsoft adds 10 more backwards compatible games to the Xbox One.

As Microsoft promised, they are continuing to keep their backwards compatibility initiative going by releasing more 360 titles that will work on the Xbox One. 10 more games were added this month, with The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings being the most noteworthy. Check out the entire list below:

  • Aegis Wing
  • Age of Booty
  • Counter-Strike: GO
  • Jeremy McGrath’s Offroad
  • Sam & Max Save the World
  • Skullgirls
  • Small Arms
  • Soulcalibur
  • Space Giraffe
  • The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

It’s a nice list overall. Playing through The Witcher 2 will be prove fun to those who missed it, especially since most loved The Witcher 3 so much.

The most asked for titles (Call of Duty, for example) still aren’t on the list, which isn’t really that surprising. Microsoft will have a hard time getting some of these franchises because publishers can still make money off bundles for the new hardware. Imagine how well a Call of Duty bundle will do, that includes last generation’s best titles in one package, for the PS4 and Xbox One. Activision knows that, so there isn’t much incentive for the company to make those titles BC.

That’s it for the week, folks. Like always, enjoy your weekend. Will you be playing Destiny on Valentine’s Day? Do you play games with your significant other? Let us know in the comments below!
