MAN AT ARMS: REFORGED Builds VOLTRON’S Blazing Sword

In the original Voltron animated series from 1984, the Blazing Sword was essentially the finishing move of Voltron. There was rarely a RoBeast that couldn’t be cut in half by the power of the Blazing Sword. If the Voltron Force had used it to open their battles then each episode of the show would have been a lot shorter!

The popular YouTube series, Man at Arms: Reforged recently paid tribute to the first Voltron by focusing an entire episode dedicated to building a Blazing Sword based on the cartoon’s design. And this is a sword that can actually ignite.

Swordsmith brothers Matt and Kerry Stagmer of Baltimore Knife and Sword took the lead in this recreation of Voltron’s iconic weapon, with John Mitchell as the Fabricator who cut the metal in the complex shape of the sword. After additional steps were taken to create two halves of the sword around the eventual propane manifold (that’s how the sword ignites), Machinist Robert Mertes cut a fuller, which is the center groove of the blade that makes it lighter to handle. Goldsmith Lauren Schott also demonstrated the steps taken to create the crossguard and the decorations of the sword. Blacksmith Sam Salvati put on several of the finishing touches for the blade, which was described as a hybrid of a prop sword and an actual sword. Finally, Mitchell welded both halves of the sword together.

Later in the episode, Voltron cosplayer Rocky Melvin got in on the fun and tested out the Blazing Sword on an unsuspecting Godzilla toy and an assortment of fruits and soda bottles. It wasn’t quite as satisfying as watching Voltron take out a giant space monster, but it was still fun. The expressions on Salvati’s face were particularly hilarious when he got his hands on the sword as well.
