Make Your July 4th Dark and Gritty with this CAPTAIN AMERICA/DARK KNIGHT RETURNS Mash-Up

For my 11th birthday, I received something that maybe should have waited a few years. The previous summer, Batman had been released in the theatres and I went through the same Bat-Craze everyone else did. So when my parents asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I said The Dark Knight Returns! I had read about how it influenced the tone of the movie a bit and I wanted to read it. Little did I know that at 11, I would have ZERO idea what was going on. I believe it took about four years of getting through it before I caught on to what it was trying to say about Batman, and society as a whole. It is still one of my favorite stories to this day (controversial, I know đŸ™‚ ).

Artist Nick Perks also likes this seminal story, and from the gallery below, likes the Star-Spangled Avenger as well. He took the official superhero of Independence Day (besides Bill Pullman) and created The Dark Knight Returns as a story revolving Captain America, called The White Knight Returns. Now, these are merely the covers, with no story to go with it, but with Iron Man playing the Superman role, I would LOVE to see a Civil War adaptation done in this format. The gallery below includes both Nick’s covers and the original covers that inspired them.

So what do you think? Who else would be a good fit to receive a Dark Knight Returns treatment? Let me know on Twitter or in the comments below.
