Reimagining a character as iconic as Luke Skywalker was always going to be a big undertaking. Some fans were shocked to see their hero living as a hermit alone on the desolate, yet beautiful planet of Ahch-To. Luke’s new life in Star Wars: The Last Jedi was a representation of fighting and surviving wars and losses, and ultimately letting down the ones closest to him.
And we have another insight into the how the legend of Luke Skywalker came to be as illustrator and concept artist Christian Alzmann shared some gorgeous original art he created in 2013 during the concept phase of The Force Awakens.
The caption explains Alzmann was given directions referencing one of cinema’s most iconic and brutal characters: Marlon Brando’s Colonel Walter E. Kurtz from Apocalypse Now. That’s interesting, but the most notable aspect of this caption is that Alzmann said Luke was being described as hiding from the world in a cave. So, even in 2013, this is a possibility someone, maybe even Episode VII director J.J. Abrams, envisioned for the Jedi. And also what George Lucas imagined. The series’ creator apparently loved the 2013 design so much that he gave it his ultimate seal of approval “Fabulouso.”
