The last time Louis C.K. directed a movie, you could say that it didn’t go so well. It was 2001 when the comedian directed Pootie Tang, a movie that earned far less than its budget and that was a critical flop. A lot has happened since then, though. C.K. has become a respected comedian, TV auteur, and filmmaker, so without telling anybody, he went ahead and directed his first movie in 16 years, called I Love You, Daddy (via Entertainment Weekly).

The Toronto International Film Festival just announced that the black and white movie will make its debut at this year’s festival, which begins on September 7th. As The Los Angeles Times notes, the movie “centers on Glen Topher, a successful television producer and writer, and his daughter China.” C.K. plays the lead, Chloe Grace Moretz is China, and the rest of the excellent cast is rounded out by Charlie Day, John Malkovich, Edie Falco, and Pamela Adlon.

That’s pretty much all we know about the movie for now, but it seems like C.K. learned a lot from his Pootie Tang experience and everything that has happened since then, saying previously:

“That experience was very painful, I was sucking at making the movie and got fired off of it, and they put my name on it anyway. But failing at Pootie Tang is one of the reasons for why this show is good. The army of failures I’ve had are the reasons that I’m good at what I’m doing now.”
