Listen To A Beautiful Folk Cover of the FRESH PRINCE Theme Song

Although Manchester Orchestra frontman Andy Hull and former Miracle Of 86 singer Kevin Devine have been covering the Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air theme song since 2008, a new live video of their rendition has us longing for a pair of white overalls and Air Jordans.

In the clip, the two indie-rock pals sit next to each other on an upholstered couch, acoustic guitars in hand, while Hull looks directly into camera to pre-empt the performance by saying, “This is a new track we’ve been working on for a minute.”

“Yeah, this one has definitely germinating in the lab,” Devine adds, with a sinister laugh.

Guess the joke’s on us, though, because instead of an original collaboration, the pair sync harmonies and launch right into the first line of the TV theme song, singing, “West Philadelphia born and raised, on the playground is where I spent most of my days.”

Instead of attempting to flex their seemingly non-existent hip-hop skills, Hull and Devine bend and stretch the song into something that sounds like a B-side off Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds. It’s a beautiful and haunting rendition that no one would expect from the borrowed material—especially Carlton Banks because we all know he prefers Tom Jones over Jan & Dean.

In case you’d like to listen to the tunes consecutively, here’s the theme song in its familiar form.

To support their latest album, HOPE, Manchester Orchestra is currently on tour. Dates and venues can be found on their web site. As for Kevin Devine, he’ll release the “She Can See Me” 7-inch on Nov. 11 and will be touring around Australia at the same time. Dates and venues can also be found on his site.
