Lionsgate is Working on a BORDERLANDS Film Adaptation

The future of video game-to-film adaptations is looking a bit brighter as of late. Yesterday, we got an impressive first look at Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch in Assassin’s Creed. Today, Lionsgate took to the web to reveal that they’re developing a film based on 2K and Gearbox Software’s hit title Borderlands, and holy butt stallions we’re excited!

The film is being produced by father/son duo Avi and Ari Arad, who’ve already made a name for themselves working on the likes of Blade, X-Men, Iron Man, The Amazing Spider Man, and Ghost Rider. If the Arad name sounds familiar, that’s because Avi Arad is also tied to several other film adaptations including Uncharted, Ghost in the Shell, and Metal Gear Solid. Hopefully that means fans of the franchise are in good hands.

“Part of our strategy in entering the game space under Peter Levin has been to source new brands with built-in audiences that will translate into great films and television shows,” stated Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger in a press release. “The ‘Borderlands’ games don’t pull any punches, and we’ll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise.”

Anyone who’s gotten so much as a glimpse at Borderlands knows it’s bursting at the seams with charisma. Claptrap, Tiny Tina, and even Handsome Jack are still among some of my favorite characters in gaming. Considering it was just announced, it is still unclear whether the film will follow characters we already know and love, or will pull an Assassin’s Creed and introduce fans to a new protagonist all together.

“Lionsgate has emerged as a major creative force in the global marketplace with an incredible portfolio of brands; our partners at Gearbox have pioneered and cultivated an iconic property; and Avi and Ari Arad are two of the most successful producers of action franchises,” Take-Two Interactive Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick said. “This alliance is ideally positioned to create a bold, provocative, no-holds-barred motion picture phenomenon that will delight ‘Borderlands” current legions of fans and captivate moviegoers around the world.”

It’s safe to say that the film industry doesn’t exactly have the best track record for adapting video games to the big screen. Despite being gifted films like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Mortal Kombat (sorry, nostalgia), we’ve also suffered through the likes of Super Mario Bros., Doom, and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Here’s to hoping things turn around.
