Lionsgate and Comic-Con Team Up For VOD Service

For a few years now Lionsgate Entertainment and Comic-Con International in San Diego have gone together like peanut butter and jelly. With a catalog that boasts such genre favorites as The Hunger Games Series, the Divergent Series, and Sly Stallone’s Expendables franchise, Lionsgate has found the perfect venue to reach out to their fans in CCI, and it seems they are ready to take the next step in their relationship.

It was announced today that Lionsgate and Comic-Con International will be launching a subscription-based video-on-demand service directed at the Comic-Con crowd. The official press releases states that the service “will launch with a broad portfolio of content including original short-form content created exclusively for the channel’s subscribers, films and television series from Lionsgate and other studios designed to appeal to the diverse interests of Comic-Con’s fan base as well as exclusive archived footage from Comic-Con’s 45-year history.” This will also include archival footage of WonderCon, Comic-Con’s soon-to-be-LA-based sister convention, and a push to make the Comic-Con International Film Festival a 365 day-a-year event.

The Comic-Con International channel will be Lionsgate’s third streaming service partnership, in addition to the previously announced Tribeca Shortlist service and the Lionsgate Entertainment World platform launched with the Alibaba Group in China. The Comic-Con channel does not yet have a confirmed launch date when it will go live, but it is safe to assume it will be close to this year’s Convention in July.
