Massive LEGO DeLorean Looks Like it Could Really Travel BACK TO THE FUTURE

You may not need roads, but if you want to build your own nearly life-sized version of Doc Brown’s DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future out of LEGO, it turns out you do need 65,143 pieces and over 290 hours to put them all together. And that is just what one Master LEGO team has done.

We first came across this massive recreation at Laughing Squid, and it was designed by Russell Søren-Larsen and “The Brickman” Ryan McNaught. (For reference, this is the ream who’ve brought you a gigantic sinking LEGO Titanic and full-sized LEGO Doctor Who TARDIS.) This take on the DeLorean was officially licensed by Universal, who required McNaught’s team to also include working lights and to make sure smoke could come out of the vents in the back. So not only does this look like Doc Brown’s car, it looks like it’s actually traveling through time.

While not a true 1:1 scale, it’s still huge, in part because of how they built it. McNaught wrote, “This model is one of the largest mostly plate build[s] we have ever constructed and you can really see it in this front view. If we’d used bricks, we simply wouldn’t have achieved the sleek shape of the real DeLorean.”

He also says the rear was “especially complex,” not only because of Universal’s requirements, but because of the detail that went into it. All the work was clearly worth it, though, because there’s so much to appreciate here, from Doc’s “OUTATIME” vanity plate, to the wires that make it look like this car can actually be driven, to the main chassis.
